John Roland, 86, moved from San Antonio to the East Side neighborhood in Austin in the 1960s to take care of his ailing father. “I remember when white folks didn’t come this side of 35,” he said. Almost every morning, he buys a lottery ticket and has breakfast at Taco-Mex. Afterward, he goes to see his girlfriend of 30 years. He said both he and his girlfriend agreed early on that neither of them wanted to get married and that each wanted to have their own living space. He posed for portrait near 12th and Harvey streets in Austin, Texas on January 14, 2017.
